Hostelling is green by design, because hostellers share accommodations, transportation, and meals. HI-USA operates a network of hostels that encourage and enable low impact travel, while preserving and protecting landmark buildings and communities where they reside. Our hostels are built on the concept of shared spaces to foster interaction between guests, which helps to reduce our carbon footprint.
Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability has awarded HI Los Angeles – Santa Monica a Green Business certificate. The Green Business Certification Program is a voluntary program that encourages businesses to implement proactive actions that are good for their bottom line and the environment. The hostel continues to work hard to become more green: on site, we use energy-efficient light bulbs, Energy Star appliances, and green-certified cleaning products, have installed aerators on all sinks, and only purchase paper containing at least 40% post-consumer recycled content.
To complement the changes in hardware and cleaning supplies, HI-Santa Monica also educates travelers about recycling and honors Earth Hour every April.
HI Los Angeles – Santa Monica is proud to be the first hostel in the HI network to have been green certified! Check out Assistant General Manager Tatiane Rodrigues talking to Santa Monica City TV about all the ways we’re making hostelling greener below:
